  • Do you sell outdoor/indoor statuary?
The Home & Garden Store sells both indoor and outdoor statuary. When most avid gardeners refer to outdor statuary, they are thinking of concrete and think of indoor statuary as resin. Of course we sell concrete statuary primary for outdoor usage, however some folks use it indoors. We don't typically recommend using resin outside even though it can hold up to our weather fairly well, especially if it's placed in a protected area, away from our intense summer heat and the sun's summer rays. Plastic is not recommended for outdoor use unless you plan on disposing of it at the end of a season or two. When purchasing a splashing fountain, keep in mind that most fountains splash water outside the basin and can damage floors.

  • When is the best time to plant a tree or shrub?
This is a question that's most often asked, especially during our hot summer months. I might ask this question before answering this question. Many landscapers are knowledgable about planting trees and the basic requirements of caring for them. And as you might have noticed, they start planting in the spring and soon as the soil thaws out enough to allow them to plant and most quit in the late fall when the soil is too frozen to dig in. Having said that, plants can be planted anytime the soil can be dug in. We might through out this suggestion - plan your panorama landscape during the winter months! There are certain advantages to planting in the spring or fall months. The advantage to planting in the spring is that there is an excellent selection of nursery stock to choose from, but prices are typically somewhat higher than later in the fall. Another advantage is that plants planted during the spring have the opportunity to acclimante to our soil throughout the growing season. Spring growing conditions, adaquate fertilizing and watering is also important to a plants survival. The advanage to planting in the fall is that although the selection is somewhat thinner, The Home & Garden Store/Aloha Home and Garden offers discounts that are sometimes equal or less than cost. We do this to clear out nursery stock and reduce the necessity of caring for plants during the winter months. There are a few exceptions to planting most anytime of year, although they are few. I would certainly consider planting nursery stock such as rhododendrons or broadleaf azaleas during the spring months. You should always consult a professional at The Home & Garden Store/Aloha Home and Garden prior to making a purchase. We have been in the nursery business for nearly 50 years and we know plants that perform well here in the Treasure Valley. Give us a call at 208.917.4820 or 208-350-6888 and let us help you with all your gardening questions. Many of your gardening questions can be found here in the "Frequent Asked Questions" section of this website.
  • How much can I prune a shrub or tree?
This depends on the tree or shrub that requires pruning. We might start by recommending pruning around the 15th of October and into the first heavy frost and/or in the spring, around the 1st to the 15 of March. This is a general recommendation and does not apply to every plant. When pruning in the spring, start by looking for dead or diseased branches. Typically dead or diseased branches are brown to gray in color. On trees, you may find it difficult to scrape the cambium layer (soft bark on many tree branches). On shrubs such as roses, diseased branches may be black or purple and should definately be removed along with any crossing or touching branches. We recommend never pruning more than 1/3 of the existing grow in one season. For more information, give The Home & Garden Store/Aloha Home and Garden a call at 208-350-6888 or 208-917-4820. You can also check here on the website to find many of your gardeing questions answered.
  • Is sunlight important to a plant?
Of great importance is the amount of sunlight plants receive throughout the day. Plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas can not tolerate our intense, hot afternoon sun and needs to be in the shade no later than 2:00, preferably sooner. On the other hand, trees such as maple or honey locust need a full day’s sun to look great. Some plants grow reasonably well in either sun or shade, examples are limelight hydrangeas and ice plant. The homeowner should determine the amount of sunlight an area receives, the time of day the area is in the sun and that will help in guiding the customer to the plants required for a given area . This is a general rule that we use in determining what type of plants to recommend to a customer when helping them at the The Home & Garden Store. We ask the question, “Is the area where you intend to plant a tree or shrub in the sun after 3:00 pm? Three to seven p.m. is the hottest part of the day where we live, making it an important question for the customer. Sometimes there is a fence, home or other structure that may block the sun where the customer intends to plant and should to be considered when making a plant selection. There are other important questions when selecting a plant besides sun. Not only should you keep the sun in mind, but also privacy, sun screening created by the plant, height, width, soil conditions and of course the customers thoughts and ideas as well as other factors. It’s also important to consider your neighbor’s when making a plant selection. Although they can’t tell you what to plant, keeping them in mind is certainly respectable.
