Gardening enthusiasts in the Treasure Valley often find alkaline soil to be a challenge due to the region's unique climatic conditions and soil composition. When the soil's pH exceeds 7, which is nearly all of the Boise area, it's considered alkaline, restricting nutrient availability and hindering plant growth. Knowing how to amend alkaline soil is crucial for cultivating a garden where plants can effectively absorb the necessary nutrients that make a plant healthy. This guide will provide you with practical steps to adjust alkaline soil in Boise and encourage healthy plant development.
Understanding Our Alkaline Soil
Boise's soil is often characterized by its higher pH levels that can be influenced by factors such as Boise's geology where we find the soil pH in the Boise foothills different than the area surrounding the Boise, river, then there is the bench area and the soil there is different than that of south Boise towards the Kuna area. However, I haven't seen anywhere in the Boise area where the soil pH is below 7 unless it's been amended. Understanding the specific challenges posed by alkaline soil in this region is the first step in effective gardening.

Steps to Amend Alkaline Soil
1. Test Your Soil
Before making any amendments, it's essential to test the soil pH. Soil testing kits are available at The Home & Garden Store or through the University of Idaho Extension office which is located on Glenwood street in Boise. This will help you determine the current pH level and how much amendment is needed.
2. Add Organic Matter
Incorporating organic matter such as Cowgirl compost, Ferti-lome Ultimate Potting Soil, or Ferti-lome Canadian Peat Moss can help lower soil pH. These materials improve soil structure and promote beneficial microbial activity, which can aid in nutrient absorption.
3. Use Sulfur or Iron Sulfate
Adding elemental sulfur or iron sulfate can effectively lower the pH of alkaline soil. Follow the recommended application rates based on your soil test results. It's important to note that these amendments work slowly, so patience is required. We recommend adding Hi-Yield Elemental Sulfur to the soil when planting annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, and trees.
4. Choose Acid-Loving Plants
Consider planting acid-loving plants that thrive in slightly acidic to neutral soil. In Boise, suitable options include blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons, which can add beauty to your garden while adapting to the soil conditions. Note: To keep the soil acidic, you should monitor the soil at least once each year.
5. Monitor and Maintain Soil Health
Once you've amended the soil, continue to monitor the pH levels and overall soil health. Regular testing and amendments will help maintain an optimal environment for plant growth.

Conclusion
Amending alkaline soil in the Treasure Valley, is essential for successful gardening. By understanding your soil's characteristics and following these practical steps, you can create a thriving garden that supports healthy plant development.
