In the beautiful Treasure Valley, a diverse array of clematis varieties can be found flourishing, each showcasing its unique charm and beauty. These climbing plants, known for their stunning flowers and vigorous growth, thrive best when planted in moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It is essential to ensure that the soil retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged, as clematis roots are susceptible to rot in overly saturated conditions. Proper drainage is crucial for the health of these plants, allowing them to flourish and produce abundant blooms throughout the growing season.
Clematis can be categorized into three distinct groups based on their blooming habits, each with specific care requirements and pruning needs. The first category, designated as (A), consists of clematis that bloom on old wood. This means that these plants produce flowers on the growth that occurred in the previous year. To maintain their health and encourage robust blooming, it is vital to prune these varieties soon after they have finished flowering. This timing allows the plant ample opportunity to grow new shoots and set buds for the following year, ensuring a vibrant display of flowers in the next blooming season.
The second category, labeled (B), includes clematis that bloom before the end of June, utilizing the growth from the previous year. These plants are particularly valued for their early blooms, which can add color and interest to the garden in the springtime. Since they rely on last year's growth for their flowers, careful attention to pruning is necessary to avoid cutting off the stems that will produce blooms. Properly managing their growth cycle will lead to a more abundant and visually appealing display.
Finally, the third category, referred to as (C), encompasses clematis that bloom on new wood, typically starting around the middle of June and continuing through the middle of September. This type of clematis is particularly exciting for gardeners because it offers a prolonged blooming season. To promote healthy growth and an impressive floral display, it is recommended to prune these varieties around March 15th. This timely pruning encourages the plant to develop new shoots, which will bear flowers later in the summer. It is crucial to remember that this type of clematis does not bloom on old wood, so any old growth should be removed to make way for the new growth that will produce the season's blooms.
In summary, understanding the specific needs and characteristics of each clematis category is essential for successful cultivation in the Treasure Valley. By providing the right conditions, including well-drained soil and appropriate pruning practices, gardeners can enjoy the stunning beauty and variety of clematis throughout the growing season, enhancing their landscapes with these magnificent flowering vines.
Clematis can be planted in full sun, however we recommend planting a low-growing groundcover to keep the roots cool and damp during our hot sunny afternoon conditions.
